BLAKE: THE CHAMP

THE PENSOLE ALUMNUS AND BACHELOR OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN (AUBURN UNIVERSITY), IS THE WINNER OF THE FIRST CONTEST HELD BY WAU AND OBSCURE SNEAKERS, HAVING ALSO BEEN THE MOST VOTED BY THE PUBLIC.

FOR THIS SNEAKER HE TOOK INSPIRATION FROM HIS HOMETOWN, BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.

THE MAGIC CITY EARNED ITS NAME BACK IN THE 1880’S BECAUSE OF STEEL PRODUCTION.

HIS RELATION TO THE SNEAKER IS THE CITY’S HISTORY AND HIS PASSION FOR DESIGN.

“I chose this subject because of what the city gave me when I left. I’m inspired by the people and the environment of the downtown area’s. This city holds so much potential and the only better way to reflect “The Magic City” would be through a retro sneaker. I carry it with me everywhere I go that I represent my city- This feeling is strong as steel and no one can take this from me.

I want to show others their potential you just have to hold no limits on your passion. This city gave me so much drive and it’s only right for me to give something back. I want this to be shown in the work of the shoe-its craft, form, colors, feel-but most important the story. I’ve poured over 1000 hours into my passion to get where I am today and I’ve made sure the detail is displayed.

The colors come from the Red Mountain, the Vulcan and the surrounding green landscapes of Birmingham.

The Red Mountain is significant because of the abundance amount of red iron ore-this would help supply the steel industry in Birmingham earning it “The Magic City” due to its growth. This feature is seen as the hidden nylon lace up and as the @wau.weareunderdogs Logo.

Today, Sloss Furnace is a national historic land site that was restored due to its history during its heavy steel production days-the smoke stacks are seen as the small circles on the heel counter.

The Vulcan is one of the largest cast iron statues in the world. It reflects Birmingham’s roots of the iron and steel industry.

This can be seen as the heel counter- in a sense that my roots will always have my “back”.
The paneling of the shoe is inspired around the form language of the midosle.

The @obscuresneakers logo is seen on the heel counter gap as an embossed steel plate held down by the pull tab.

Blake also presented 8 additional colourways for his design.

Congratulations, Blake "turbo_330" Scordino,
